Entrepreneur vs Businessman

I met these two amazing guys at Hackerspace
over the weekend.

One introduced himself as an Entrepreneur and the other, a Businessman. However, both of them had young businesses and I asked the businessman why he didn’t call himself an Entrepreneur. His reply was simple;

“I do retail, it’s not as interesting as a startup.”

The Entrepreneur jumped on hearing this and vehemently disagreed. I disagreed too.

An Entrepreneur is a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, assuming the risk for the sake of the profit.

This Businessman was mistaken about entrepreneurship and I believe the fault is largely with today’s media outlets. Startups have been glamorized. Web 2.0 has been glamorized. Founders have been made akin to rockstars. The process has been glamorized. The struggle has been dramatized. But the point of all this, profits, has been completely forgotten.

Every young business out there was a startup. And every self-created Businessman is an Entrepreneur. An Entrepreneur who’s already made it.

Video: Better Ideas, How to?

I came across this impressive video that illustrates the process of generating new ideas. It’s really well made and has taken a considerable amount of effort. See for yourself.

Video: Living with Robots

Honda released this awesome short film titled ‘Living with Robots’  at the Sundance Festival. It does justice to explaining the motivation for robotics and also the reason for people’s general fear towards robots.

We fear robots because we think they will replace us. So, we fear robots just like we fear immigrants/aliens?

Startups, the real deal.

Paul Graham has a very insightful article about the various unspoken issues about startups, its founders and your co-founders character. This as a must read for all budding entrepreneurs.

Willow Garage’s PR2 Beta Program

Willow Garage, my favorite robotics company, has just announced its PR2 Beta Program. PR2 is a highly compliant, personal robot with the best compliant arm in the industry. It is the flagship robot for the Robotics Operating System (ROS) and has demonstrated complex tasks such as the opening of doors, plugging itself into a wall power supply and intricate manipulation tasks.

And the best parts is that the PR2 is going for free!

Singapore Government Donates Generous $50k for Haiti

My prayers go to the people of Haiti. Nature has not been kind to them with three hurricanes and now this.

And now the Singapore government decides to help them with a very generous $50,000 donation and written condolences from the Singapore President S.R.Nathan.

For the record, the President earns a salary of S$3.9m a year, that is about S$10,685 a day which is US$7691 a day. Now that puts the US$50,000 donation in perspective.

UPDATE: Google has pledged to donate US$1m to Haiti. You can help too by donating via Google Checkout here: http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake
